The storm system on Friday spread rainfall amounts through out Stephenson County of .75 inches to 2.50 inches and in some areas up to 3.0 inches. A majority of the rain fell again in the western half of the county. The Pecatonica drainage system in southern Wisconsin received on average 2 inches of rain fall. Do to the lack of heavy rain the last week, the ground was able to absorb up to ½ to ¾ of an inch which helped alleviate some of the run off into the river and streams.

The Pecatonica River in Freeport is forecast to crest at 14.0 feet some time on Thursday. Residents living in the Pecatonica flood plain should remain alert to the flooding potential of sudden or prolonged heavy rain events.

Drivers should expect to find water on the roadways along roads that are in or near the flood plain, such as Van Buren at Lancaster, Henderson between Lancaster and Park Street, and Streets south of Stephenson from Hancock to Louis.

Drivers are advised to turn around…It takes only two feet of water to float most vehicles…including sport utility vehicles. Also any flood water should be considered “black water” which is contaminated and should be avoided. Those people living in or near flood plains are advised to get their wells tested. High water tables could contaminate well water if there is a break in the well casing. Water test kits can be obtained from the Stephenson County Environmental Health Group located at 295 W. Lamm Road, Freeport.
