March Precipitation

Up until Monday, the month of March had been running a little dry. In Rockford a normal March will bring 2.39" of precipitation. From March 1-30 we only received a little over half of that with 1.23." That is a big dieficit of more than an inch. However, heavy rains on Monday brought the Stateline 1.18" of rain in about 12 hours and we could see another half to three quarters of an inch more before this system pulls out tonight.
Because of the heavy snows this winter, the spring thaw has been running high, despite seeing less than average precipitation this month. The additional rainfall could cause some flooding over the next week as the water drains slowly into the rivers. Be prepared to take immediate action to protect your things and yourself if you live near a stream or river. And, as always, never attempt to cross a flooded roadway in your car. Just a few inches is enough to stall your car in the path of a flood.
