The first big rain of the season caused major problems overnight on northern California roadways. The downpour was also responsible for several power outages in the San Francisco Bay area Wednesday (10/10).

Heavy rain and flooding forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down parts of a major highway in the Santa Cruz Mountains. In fact, it looked like the surf was up there with the waves coming down the roadway. The rainwater near Summit Road collected so much that it started to flood the area, catching drivers in about two to three feet of water.

Caltrans worked in the middle of the night to clear more than two feet of water out of storm drains. The roadways typically become more slippery during the first heavy rains of the season, because the moisture loosens up dried oils on the pavement that collect over time from passing cars.
