Free Well Testing for Winnebago County

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County Health Department will be offering free well testing for submerged private wells due to the April 2013 flooding from Monday, May 6th through Friday May 17th, 2013.

See the released advisory below:

1. Is their a problem with private water wells submerged or surrounded by the April 2013 flood waters?

Yes, water wells are susceptible to bacterial contamination when submerged or surrounded by flood water.

2. What can be done to ensure that water from your private water well is safe to drink?

The Health Department advises that you do not drink your water if it comes from a private water well that was submerged or surrounded by flood waters until you have it tested for and found to be free of bacterial contamination.

3. If your well has been submerged due to the recent flooding in April, please follow instructions below.

• Wait until all water recedes from around the well.
• After water recedes, connect hose to an outside faucet and run until water is free of visual contamination. This could take several hours. Please do not discharge water anywhere near any septic system.
• When water runs clear, it is time to disinfect. It is strongly recommended to hire a private well contractor for this step.
