Current Flooding Conditions in Rock County

UPDATE: The Rock County area remains under a flood warning and the National Weather Service is indicating that the Rock River is at major flood stages in the Lake Koshkonong and Newville areas and moderate flood stages in the Afton area. Local forecasts are calling for a chance of precipitation through the week with heavier rain expected tomorrow.

At this time, the following areas are closed or being monitored by the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and 911 Communications Center for flooding concerns:

• South Christianson Rd – Closed
• Happy Hollow Park – Closed
• South River Road – Road Closure from Hwy 11 Bypass/Avalon Rd to South Oakley Rd
• Mallwood Estates – Lake Shore Drive Closed from East Road 3 St. to East Road 7 St.
• Mallwood Estates – East Road 9 St. Closed
• Mallwood Estates – East Road 4 St. through East Road 8 St. east of Ridge Rd. - High waters
• Summerville Rd Closed north of S CTH J
• West St. Lawrence between S. CTH H and South Smythe School Rd – High Waters
• Highway 67 from Highway 140 to S. Northrup Rd – High Waters
• S. Northrup Rd north of Highway 67 – High Waters
• Beloit Newark and Nelson Rd – High Waters
• Sugar River and Sugar River Park – Monitoring water levels
• Avon Township – Monitoring water levels
• Milton Township: East County Line Road from N. Vogel Rd to N. Old Highway 26 – High waters

Current water levels on the Rock River are as follows:

• Rock River in Afton area – Currently at 11.68 feet with forecasts of water levels to reach 11.8 feet by next Friday (Potential for moderate to major flood levels - Record is 13.5 feet)
• Rock River at Lake Koshkonong – Currently at 12.36 feet (slight increase) with forecasts of water levels to drop to 11.8 feet by next Friday (Major flood levels – Record is 15.1 feet)
• Rock River in Newville area – Currently at 8.45 feet (Slight increase - Major flood levels)
• Turtle Creek in Clinton – Currently at 5.81 feet (decreasing) and no longer in flood stage
• Turtle Creek at Beloit – Currently at 7.3 feet (decreasing) and no longer in flood stage
• Sugar River at Brodhead - Currently at 4.3 feet and no longer in flood stage

Citizens in need of SANDBAGS are encouraged to contact their respective Town Chairperson for pick up arrangements.

Rock Township Residents – Residents should call (608) 752-4292 for sandbag arrangements. Sand and sandbags will be distributed at The Rock Town Hall at 5102 S CTH D, Afton WI.

Fulton and Milton Township Residents – Milton residents should call (608) 868-2465 for sandbag arrangements. Fulton residents should call (608) 868-4103 for sandbag arrangements. Sand is available at the following locations:
o The Rock County Highway Department sheds located at Highway 59 and North Sherman Road in Edgerton WI.
o Parking lot near entrance to Culver’s Restaurant in Newville off of Highway 59

Janesville Township Residents – Residents should call (608) 754-1468 for sandbag arrangements. Sand is available at the boat landing on North River Rd. – Just off Highway 14.

Harmony Township Residents – Residents should call (608) 868-6065 for sandbag arrangements. Sand is currently available at the multi-use lot just east of Townline Rd. on East Rotamer Road.

Beloit Township Residents – Residents should call (608) 364-2997 for sandbag arrangements. Sand and sandbags will be available at the following locations:
o Beloit Township Town Garage at 2871 South Afton Rd.
o Preservation Park on S. Riverside Dr.
o The corner of Woodland Dr. and Glenwood Dr.

A supply of SAND will be available for the sandbags at the following locations:
(Citizens should bring their own shovels)

• Parking lot near the entrance to Culvers on Highway 59 – Newville
• The Rock County Highway Department sheds located at Highway 59 and North Sherman Rd. - Edgerton

City of Janesville Residents – Sandbag Availability – Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. filled sandbags will be available for City of Janesville residents and businesses. At this time, the City is limiting sandbags to 200 per residence/business address. Janesville residents and businesses wishing to obtain complimentary sandbags are asked to visit the City Services Center (2200 Hwy. 51 N.). Residents are asked to park in the lot and enter the office customer service area to complete a registration form and show proof of Janesville corporate limits residency. Residents will then be directed to move their vehicle into the garage section of the building for sandbags to be loaded. For questions, call 755-3110.

City of Beloit Residents – Sandbag Availability – The City of Beloit Department of Public Works has available for city residents sand and sandbags. The sand and bags will be accessible outside at the Department of Public Works located at 2351 Springbrook Court. Residents should bring shovels to fill the bags. For more information, you can contact City of Beloit Department of Public Works at (608) 364-2929.

The American Red Cross will remain on standby for the following additional services as needed:

• Food, shelter and clothing
• Home Clean Up Kits
• Guidance for Recovery from Flooding
• Recovery Information and Referrals

Information regarding the flooding situation is easily available on the Rock County Sheriff’s Office webpage at www.co.rock.wi.us by selecting the Sheriff’s page.

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management staff has been working closely with the Wisconsin Emergency Management representatives to maintain situational awareness and direct the appropriate response to the flooding situation. Rock County Sheriff’s Office RECAP inmates and WORKENDER crews are assisting in the filling of sand bags at several of the sand bag locations throughout the County.

Citizens, who may be placing sand bags around their property, are reminded that exposure to flood waters can create health concerns and they should make sure to be current on the tetanus vaccine if they are in contact with flood waters.

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office is urging citizens to avoid traveling on roadways with high waters or roads closed due to flooding. Please report any hazardous conditions related to the flooding to Rock County Communications at 608-757-2244. All other concerns related to the current flood situation should be reported to the respective townships or through the Rock County Sheriff’s Office – Emergency Management Division at 608-758-8440.

• Rock River in Newville area – Currently at 8.37 feet (Major flood levels)
• Turtle Creek in Clinton – Currently at 6.1 feet and no longer in flood stage
• Turtle Creek at Beloit – Currently at 7.71 feet and no longer in flood stage
• Sugar River at Brodhead - Currently at 6.42 feet and expected to continue declining through the next week

  • Turtle Creek at Beloit – Currently at 10.04 feet approaching minor flood stages
  • Sugar River at Brodhead - Currently at 6 feet and expected to approach 7.3 feet today, minor flood stage
