Two 26-year-old men, living a century and a continent apart, changed the course of musical history forever. In 1924 New York, George Gershwin, son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, took a break from a successful career writing Broadway musicals to create a piece for solo piano and orchestra called Rhapsody in Blue. He showed that jazz – a homegrown musical style with deep roots in Black culture that had people of all races dancing – could also energize the music of the European concert hall.

In 1830 Paris, Hector Berlioz created a volcanic new masterpiece out of the white-hot fantasies fueled by the despair of unrequited love. This was not just a symphony, but a 'Fantasy Symphony' that told a story using innovations that went on to make the music of Liszt and Wagner possible.

On the Program:
Copland... Ceremonial Fanfare
Gershwin... Rhapsody in Blue
Featuring Charlie Albright, piano
Berlioz... Symphonie Fantastique, op. 14
