Canoe: The Post Canoeacopia Party-Paddle Camping Bucket List

Severson Dells Nature Center 8786 Montague Road Rockford IL 61102
Every paddler should have a bucket list of must do adventures, not necessarily ones they’ll need to quit their job for the time off, or take out a second mortgage to pay for them; adventures tuned for “normal” paddlers. Through a multimedia show the Morralls will present you with five such adventures, scattered to the four corners as well as in the middle of our great nation. Ranging from three to six days with options to extend even them even longer, these trips are sure to please.

For the Morralls, paddling is far more than a hobby or pastime, it’s been their way of life for over twenty-five years. Mark and Merri have been involved in all aspects of the sport, from paddling wild whitewater rivers, to canoe tripping in the Northern Canadian wilderness. Being so totally immersed in the sport of paddling has given them an opportunity to become deeply involved in clubs, organizations, environmental issues that affect paddling, even political issues involving river access rights and management. Their experience has also given them a clear feeling for what appeals to paddlers and how to reach them.
Paddling, and the amazing people involved in the sport, has given them so much pleasure that they've made a commitment to give back what they've received, and then some. Mark and Merri's lifelong goal is to reach out to, and draw as many people as they can into, experiencing our natural world from the seat of a canoe or kayak.

Travels on the John Muir Trail (JMT) Presented by Meghan Bowe, University of Illinois Extension

Severson Dells Nature Center 8786 Montague Road Rockford IL 61102
The John Muir Trail (JMT) stretches 211 miles through arguably the most beautiful scenery in the western United States, from the Yosemite Valley to Mt. Whitney. The trail’s namesake, John Muir, is likely the most well-known naturalist in our country’s history. His writings are inspirational, and the mystery surrounding his inspiration− the Sierra wilderness−certainly calls to those who long for backcountry experiences that promise grand vistas, high alpine lakes, and the ups and downs of mountain passes. Join Meghan Bowe as she shares her backpack experience, a planned 58-mile stretch of the JMT this past August. Through photos and narrative she will bring you along on her 6-day journey from Devil’s Postpile to Happy Isles (almost). Trail life doesn’t always go as we plan…but it’s always an adventure. Come enjoy photos and trail talk, and leave inspired to start planning your next hike.

Meghan Bowe is a life-long lover of wilderness, and all things outdoors. Early in her career she worked for the Forest Service, National Park Service and a major metropolitan park system. These days you can find her working with area youth and adults to foster important connections to urban green space and nature through experiential learning opportunities. For nearly 10 years, Meghan has worked for the University of Illinois Extension as a program coordinator. Call 1-815-335-2915 to register.
