30th Annual SwedishAmerican State Street Mile
State Street entrance to SwedishAmerican Hospital
The 1 mile race, to be held August 2 beginning at 5PM, begins near the State Street entrance to SwedishAmerican Hospital and ends on the east side of the State Street Bridge. It promises to be a great race celebrating one of the areas longest running events drawing athletes from all over the region.
This event is a tribute to race founder, Dick Berry and Ben Newson, Jr. While Berry’s primary goal was to bring a sub-four minute mile to Rockford (accomplished in 1990), he would no doubt be thrilled to see so many athletes of varying ages and abilities annually participating in the State Street Mile. To Newson,a long time local area track and cross country coach, winning wasn’t everything. What was important was “giving it the best you’ve got”. Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Rockford and the Rockford Wildcats Running Group.
There will be 5 divisional races for all groups of runners including; Masters for runners aged 40+, the Ben Newson Jr. Female Race for those attending K-12, the Ben Newson Jr. Male Race for those attending K-12, Open for persons 17-39 and a Kids’ Fun Run for children12 years and younger. Entry fees vary by division but early registration discounts are available. This race is part of the 2014 Road Runners Club of America Championship Race Series and a Rockford Road Runner 2014 Circuit Race.
New this year will be the 30th Anniversary $1,000 High School Challenge. The high school that has the most registered and participating students, staff and faculty will receive a $1,000 prize for their athletic department.
Immediately following the races, an awards ceremony will take place at the corner of State Street and Water Street, known as the City Market Festival area.
