Spencer Tracy Film Festival in Freeport

Celebrate the legacy of a legendary actor at the 3rd Annual Spencer Tracy Film Festival at the Lindo Theatre! This year's Festival features four of Spencer's best-loved films during the weekend of Friday, August 22, 2014 through Sunday, August 24, 2014. Tickets for the Spencer Tracy Film Festival are $5 and will be available at the Lindo Theatre, 115 South Chicago Avenue in downtown Freeport or online at www.classiccinemas.com.

The festival will begin with an opening reception on Friday, August 22nd from 4:30PM to 6:30 PM at 9 East Coffee in downtown Freeport. Tickets for the reception are $25 per person with proceeds going toward the long-term support of the festival. Alan Wenzel and Ed Finch will present a short program on Freeport's connection to Spencer Tracy, and there will be a raffle of film posters.

SCHEDULE:

August 22nd at 7 p.m.: Kicking off the festival on Friday, August 22 will be "Man's Castle" featuring Loretta Young co-starring with Tracy. Released in 1933, this seldom seen film wrestles with some of the economic issues of the Great Depression, as well as depicting the impact that the Depression had on the lives of ordinary people. The screening will begin at 7 p.m.

August 23 at 1 p.m.: "Edison, The Man" will be screened at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 23rd.
The script earned an Academy Award nomination for its telling of the life of famed inventor Thomas Alva Edison.

August 23 at 7 p.m.: Black markets and smuggling for war efforts are the subject of "Malaya," a 1949 film with Tracy co-starring with Jimmy Stewart. Sydney Greenstreet and Lionel Barrymore also co-star in the film which is set in Japanese occupied Malaya during World War II. "Malaya," which was released 65 years ago this year will be screened at 7 p.m.

August 24 at 1 p.m.: The laugh-riot, slap-stick comedy "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" caps off the festival on Sunday August 24, at 1 p.m. The film has been digitally remastered and will appear on screen in great color and detail. Almost everyone who was a film or television comedian in 1963 appears in this film which was made in the waning years of Tracy's career.

President's Opening Convocation

The 2014-2014 Rockford University academic year begins with a traditional convocation and remarks from President Robert L. Head. The formal opening convocation event has been held annually since 1851. Opening Convocation includes a faculty procession in full academic regalia.
