The Beauty of Kimono

Anderson Japanese Gardens welcomes David Mungenast for a lecture, "The Beauty of Kimono," on Thursday, August 21. Mungenast is a student of Kimiko Gunji, Associate Professor Emeritus and the former director of Japan House at the University of Illinois and is presenting on her behalf. David will present about traditional kimono, its history and will demonstrate kimono dressing. Formal and casual kimono will be discussed including furisode, obi, kurotomesode and yukata styles. The discussion starts at 7 pm in the Anderson Japanese Gardens Visitor Center.

All lectures are free to Anderson Japanese Garden members and are only $5 for non-members. Reservations are requested and can be made by contacting

Anderson Japanese Gardens will host its lectures on the third Thursday of each month through October, and the second Tuesday of November starting at

MakerSpace Lego Masters

For ages 9-13. Are you a Lego Master? Do you think you are up to the challenges librarians can come up with? Come to MakerSpace Lego Masters and show off your mad skills on a monthly challenge. Your works of art will be put on display until the next monthly meeting. Lego Masters moves around the city to a different library each month. Check the online web calendar for other locations. Registration is NOT required.

Jazzin' After Work

Creek Outside of the Karl J. Jacobs Center for Science and Math on Rock Valley College’s Main Campus
Rock Valley College is excited to announce a new summer music series called Jazzin’ After Work. Join us on the beautiful campus of Rock Valley College for some great music and a chance to socialize and network with RVC staff and faculty, as well as fellow community members.

On Thursday, August 21, from 6:00 to 8:00pm by the creek outside of the Karl J. Jacobs Center for Science and Math on Rock Valley College’s Main Campus (3301 N Mulford Rd). The event will include special musical guest Carla Prather with ZZAJÉ, giveaways and drawings, and free food and beverages provided by Jersey Mike’s Subs.

Admission is free and these events are open to all in the community.
