The Nutcracker Presented by RSO

Coronado Performing Arts Center Rockford, IL
– The Rockford Symphony Orchestra and the Rockford Dance Company’s annual presentation of The Nutcracker ballet will be performed in the beautiful Coronado Performing Arts Center on Saturday, December 6 at 7:00 pm and a matinee on Sunday, December 7 at 3:00 pm.

Live music from the Rockford Symphony Orchestra along with a beautifully choreographed ballet, vibrant sets, and dazzling costumes make this the premier production in Northern Illinois and a wonderful way to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season. This year’s production will feature the choreography of RDC Artistic Director,Wayland Anderson.

The timeless beauty of Tchaikovsky’s music performed by the RSO remains a constant. According to RSO Music Director Steven Larsen, “our musicians know this music almost by heart…so, when you can start from near-technical-perfection, great things are possible.”

The Children Holiday Shoppe 2014

The Children’s Holiday Shoppe is an opportunity for children to experience a totally independent shopping adventure for their friends, family and teachers without the supervision or assistance of their parents. In addition to experiencing the joy of holiday gift giving, children have the opportunity to practice their decision-making and money management skills as they shop with the help of volunteer elves.

Gifts range from $1-$8. All proceeds support MotherHouse Crisis Nursery, providing childcare free of charge 24/7 to children through age 6, in addition to providing resources and referrals, when a family has nowhere else to turn.

Putting Small Acres to Work

Wondering what to do with a few extra acres? Come learn about ways to make your extra land more productive or even turn a profit!
Putting Small Acres to Work will take place Saturday, December 6th, at the NIU Rockford Meeting and Conference Center located at 8500 E. State St., just one mile east of I-90. The registration desk will open at 8:00am, and the program will last from 9:00am to 4:00pm. There will be general sessions on building soil health and choosing scale-appropriate equipment, as well as numerous breakout sessions on both plant and animal topics, including perennial vegetables, berry fruits, root cellars, season extension, chickens, hogs, beekeeping, and grazing. Outreach professionals from both Illinois and Wisconsin will provide the expertise.
To register for Putting Small Acres to Work at NIU-Rockford, please visit our website at web.extension.illinois.edu/bdo and go to “Register Online” on the right-hand side. You can also contact University of Illinois Extension-Boone County at 815-544-3710 for more information or to register. The program fee is $40 per person, which includes all program materials and lunch. Please register by Monday, December 1st to guarantee a space and a meal.

The public is invited to attend “The Rockford Community Nativity Display and Concert” presented by the Rockford Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 324 West University, Rockford, IL on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 5:00-9:00 PM and Saturday, December 6, 2014, 2:00-8:00 PM . ADMISSION IS FREE AND FREE REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED. On Sunday, December 7, 2014, 7:00-8:00 PM, join us for the broadcast of a Christmas Devotional with messages from the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Christmas music by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir which is also a fee event. 1800's Holiday Walk

Boone County Conservation District 603 N Appleton Road, Belvidere, IL
Join the Boone County Conservation District in Belvidere, IL for an evening of holiday magic as you are transported back in time to an 1800’s Christmas. Visitors will stroll along luminary lit paths, listen to carolers singing holiday songs and stop at two historic log cabins to learn about Christmas past as the inhabitants prepare for the holidays. Children of all ages with meet a Civil War Santa in his field tent. Enjoy holiday treats and listen to live music in the one-room schoolhouse. Visitors can learn about winter on the prairie at a Native American traveling tent. The Blacksmith will be busy working in his shop creating holiday gifts. Across from the blacksmith shop there will be popcorn cooked over an open fire.

After the outside activities visitors can warm up at the Roger Gustafson Nature Center and purchase gift items made by local artists. Children can make their own holiday ornaments and enjoy spiced cider and holiday treats.
