“African American Veterans from World War Two and Beyond”
In years past Veterans Memorial Hall has offered an event to recognize Black History Month. This year is no exception as we present programs that bridge the generations with World War II Veterans from the Tuskegee Airmen, DODO Chapter and the Chicago Chapter of the Montford Point Marines joined with African American Veterans from the Korean and Vietnam Wars and beyond. We will honor these Veterans with a two-day program on Saturday, February 20, and Sunday, February 21, 2016, from 1pm to 4pm. Attendees will hear stories of brave service and patriotism unlike any other and experience an unique understanding of what it was like to be an African American serving in the United States Military. This program allows those in attendance to hear firsthand these Veterans accounts of their service and to be inspired by their stories of valor and patriotism.
Saturday, February 20th 2016 1-4 PM
Members of the Tuskegee Airmen, DODO Chapter will spend the beginning of the program interacting with our modulator answering a series of general questions, then during the second half of the program they will answer questions from the audience. This colorful exchange between the audience and the Veterans is a crowd favorite and not to be missed. After the presentation portion of the event the Veterans will assemble in our library where they will sign autographs and talk to attendees one on one.
Sunday, February 21st 2016 1-4 PM
Following the past’s day’s event format we will bring to the stage five original Montford Point Marines. These Marines will share their stories of service in the Marine Corps during a time of racial inequality and segregation. Meet these historic Veterans up close and experience firsthand their stories of bravery and sacrifice. Attendees will learn how these Veterans were able to overcome many obstacles and why they truly deserve to be called” Greatest Generation”.
