Bumble Bees and Other Native Pollinators

Date(s): 7/21/2015

10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden, 2715 S. Main St, Rockford, IL 61102
Native pollinators are a fascinating and important part of our lives and our landscapes. Pollinators influence and reflect the health of the environment which directly affects human health and well-being.
Rockford has a lot of different species of native pollinators but many of their populations are declining. Gardeners can be directly involved in their survival. This program will acquaint you with some of our bees and show you why and how to lend them a hand.
We’ll start with a short session on bumble bee identification and how to pick out the different species. Then we’ll go to the gardens and look for bumble bees and other types of pollinators that might be active. Warm summer days are a good time for bee hunting and Klehm is lovely place to watch them.
Barbara Williams will lead this talk and has been bee hunting with a camera for five years in the Rockford area. She’s been a fan of natural history and an avid birder for many years.
If you cannot make this class, we will hold a second class on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 1:00pm.
