6:30 - 9:00 p.m.

Nordlof Center, J. R. Sullivan Theater, 118 N. Main, Rockford
Discover the beauty, history and magic of the Appalachian Trail, a program presented by the Rockford Public Library Foundation. Willie DiFabio who has hiked the trail numerous times will speak about the natural beauty of the trail, his motivations and what it’s like to live in the woods for 6 months. After Mr. DiFabio’s program the movie “Appalachian Trail, An American Legacy” will air. This movie by Sam Henegar brings to the screen all four seasons of stunning natural beauty offered by the Appalachian landscape. Interviews with a variety of types of hikers focus on the simplicity of trail life, human relationships, and the psychic rewards of hiking, paralleling aspects of the initial vision set forth by Benton MacKaye, the AT's founder/visionary. Mr. DiFabio will be available after the movie to answer questions. A cash bar of wine and beer will be available in the lobby. Sponsored by Van Sickle and McLaughlin CPA’s, Rock Cut State Park and Rocktown Adventures.

Tickets are $5 when purchased online through Vendini and $6 at the door. Click here to buy tickets: http://bit.ly/1L4WxJd.

He is the author of numerous books and he also edits the Portland Magazine at the University of Portland. He will make you laugh, cry, and realize how fragile life on earth is and how important compassion, empathy, connections, and friendships are between all critters on this good Earth. It will be a very fun night, don’t miss it!

Guyland: the perilous world where boys become men with Michael Kimmel, Ph.D.

Date(s): 11/3/2015

7:00 pm

Fisher Memorial Chapel, Rockford University, 5050 E. State St., Rockford, IL 61108
In 1950, most Americans had completed the transition from adolescence to adulthood by age 21 or so. Today, it’s more likely to be by age 30. It’s a new stage of development, and Kimmel is our tour guide in this presentation based on his best-selling book, Guyland. Based on interviews with more than 400 young people across the country, Kimmel offers a glimpse of why so many guys are adrift through their 20s, and offers a road map towards a more conscious adulthood.
