Connect2Peace: Make Gentle the Life of this World

Date(s): 9/16/2015

7:00 pm

Maddox Theatre, Rockford University, 5050 E. State St, Rockford, IL 61108
President Robert L. Head, Ph.D., will host and facilitate a panel discussion on race relations issues and how we, as a community, walk the line between justice, protest and violence. Panel participants include; Hester Bass, author of Seeds of Freedom, the Peaceful Integration of Huntsville Alabama; Reverend Joseph Darby, presiding elder of the Beaufort District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC; Michael Perry, Ph.D., associate professor of English at Rockford University and John McNamara, senior development officer for the University and former Mayor of Rockford (1981-1989).

Dr. Head will lead a dialog to focus on events from the 1960s and the current era, probing lessons from history, exploring the ingredients that distinguish peaceful protest on significant grievances from riot and destruction. The panel will discuss the peaceful integration of Huntsville, Alabama during the 1960s, as well as the national and local crisis of April 1968 resulting in the aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Helping to give additional context to the evening is the speech given by Sen. Robert F. Kennedy on the night of Dr. King’s assassination, and the orchestral piece composed by Ray Horton, Make Gentle the Life of This World, inspired by RFK’s speech on April 4, 1968, which will be played.

The conversation is the second annual Connect2Peace Forum event hosted by Rockford University President Robert Head and presented in partnership with the Peace Coalition of the Rock River Valley and Connect2Peace.

Tickets are required, but are free of charge. Get your Forum admission ticket at the Clark Arts Center Box Office during regular hours of operation (M–F, 1–5 p.m. or 1 hour before event at location of event).

The Almost Complete Study of Brian Doyle (or at least of his writings)

Date(s): 11/17/2015

6:30 pm

Severson Dells Nature Center 8786 Montague Road Rockford IL 61102
We shall all gather and read essays and sections of books from one of our nation’s best authors. Of course that is just my opinion, but you can take part in the readings and discussion and decide for yourself. Brian will not be with us in body, but I know he will be there in spirit. He is the author of numerous books and he also edits the Portland Magazine at the University of Portland. He will make you laugh, cry, and realize how fragile life on earth is and how important compassion, empathy, connections, and friendships are between all critters on this good Earth. It will be a very fun night, don’t miss it!

Great Tide Rising! Finding Clarity and Moral Courage to Confront Climate Change

Date(s): 9/29/2015

7:00 p.m.

Severson Dells Nature Center 8786 Montague Road Rockford IL 61102
Even as seas rise against the shores, another great tide is beginning to rise – a tide of outrage against the pillage of the planet, a tide of commitment to justice and human rights, a swelling affirmation of moral responsibility to the future and to Earth’s fullness of life.
Philosopher and nature essayist Kathleen Dean Moore takes on the essential questions: Why is it wrong to wreck the world? What is our obligation to the future? What is the transformative power of moral resolve? How can clear thinking stand against the lies and illogic that batter the chances for positive change? What are useful answers to the recurring questions of a storm-threatened time – What can anyone do? Is there any hope? And always this: What stories and ideas will lift people who deeply care, inspiring them to move forward with clarity and moral courage?

The Coyote Clan rises again!

Date(s): 9/26/2015

9:30 a.m.

Severson Dells Nature Center Rockford IL
Once upon a time we had another great group of kids/families and we organized and called it, “The Coyote Clan.” (The origin of the name will become available when the timing is right.) We are thinking about reviving this group! (Not quite like the Phoenix out of ashes, but close to it.) We would meet once a month sporadically through the school year. The events might be a 2 hour hike one month and another month we may go to Il Beach State Park, or even go see the Prairie Chickens boom, or an assortment of waaay cool things. Some events parents will be welcome and others the whole family will be able to attend and most will be just the kids.
The basic idea would be to have great discovery/exploring time with spontaneous teachable moments. The plus side is that everyone will learn about awesome spots in this county and beyond!! (Almost a Buzz Lightyear quote.) The kids would be 6th – 9th grade (could be older) and you could come to one or all programs. We promise some life memories. Program leaders will be Don Miller and Annie Lynch.
If interested call, 815-335-2915. (If you can’t make the first meeting, please still call and we will let you know of upcoming events.)

Creek Crawl for Adults

Date(s): 9/12/2015

10:00 a.m.

Severson Dells Forest Preserve
Join Severson Dells Biologist/Educator Greg Keilback on a hopefully fully upright and mostly dry creek walk through the Dells! We will meet at the lower parking lot of Severson Dells forest preserve at 10:00 a.m. Bring shoes you can destroy, a back-pack with lunch and water, and a dry shirt (in a zip-lock bag to stay dry). We will explore the geology of the dells as well as the incredible history of the property and try and be back around 1:00 p.m. The hike is IN the creek so footing is unpredictable. Walking sticks are encouraged.
