Spring Fever Seed Swap

Event Dates and Times

2/9/2016
Ida Public Library 320 N. State Street, Belvidere, IL 61008
Has the cold weather got you down and ready for spring so you can get back into your garden? Are you new to gardening and would like to learn how to get started making plans for a garden this year? Join University of Illinois Extension Boone County Master Gardeners as they partner with Ida Public Library to hold their first seed swap.

Start dreaming about spring and bring your own seeds to share with others and take seeds home for this year’s garden. Don’t have seeds? No problem, come anyway. Seeds can be for flowers, vegetables, herbs, grasses, bulbs, trees and shrubs, etc. We ask that your seeds are non-GMO. Please label the seeds you bring with enough information about them so that those who take them are well informed of what they are getting.

The Spring Fever Seed Swap will be held on Tuesday, February 9 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Ida Public Library located at 320 N. State St. in Belvidere. The night will include a short video on how to get our gardens ready, seed swapping and some hands on activities. The Boone County Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions you may have on gardening. So come for an evening of fun with other gardeners, to share and gain knowledge and to make new friends.

This is a free event, but registration is needed to ensure we have enough handouts. To register for this event, please call Ida Library at 815-544-3838. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, please call the Boone County Extension office at 815-544-3710.

Veterans Memorial Hall 211 N. Main St Rockford IL 61101

Doors open at 12 PM with a formal opening ceremony scheduled for 1:00 PM, the events will conclude each day at 4 PM followed with an autograph signing session in our library. The cost is $5.00, students and seniors are free.
“African American Veterans from World War Two and Beyond”
In years past Veterans Memorial Hall has offered an event to recognize Black History Month. This year is no exception as we present programs that bridge the generations with World War II Veterans from the Tuskegee Airmen, DODO Chapter and the Chicago Chapter of the Montford Point Marines joined with African American Veterans from the Korean and Vietnam Wars and beyond. We will honor these Veterans with a two-day program on Saturday, February 20, and Sunday, February 21, 2016, from 1pm to 4pm. Attendees will hear stories of brave service and patriotism unlike any other and experience an unique understanding of what it was like to be an African American serving in the United States Military. This program allows those in attendance to hear firsthand these Veterans accounts of their service and to be inspired by their stories of valor and patriotism.
Saturday, February 20th 2016 1-4 PM
Members of the Tuskegee Airmen, DODO Chapter will spend the beginning of the program interacting with our modulator answering a series of general questions, then during the second half of the program they will answer questions from the audience. This colorful exchange between the audience and the Veterans is a crowd favorite and not to be missed. After the presentation portion of the event the Veterans will assemble in our library where they will sign autographs and talk to attendees one on one.
Sunday, February 21st 2016 1-4 PM
Following the past’s day’s event format we will bring to the stage five original Montford Point Marines. These Marines will share their stories of service in the Marine Corps during a time of racial inequality and segregation. Meet these historic Veterans up close and experience firsthand their stories of bravery and sacrifice. Attendees will learn how these Veterans were able to overcome many obstacles and why they truly deserve to be called” Greatest Generation”.

The Fintastic World of Fishes in your Backyard Presented by Dr. Phillip Willink

Event Dates and Times

3/29/2016
Severson Dells Nature Center 8786 Montague Road Rockford IL 61102
Everybody knows what a fish is. But it is difficult to know where they are and what they do since they live underwater. It is this hidden world beneath the surface of our lakes and rivers that we will explore. With the aid of photos and videos, we will discuss the diversity, behaviors, ecologies, and conservation of our regional fishes. Some are big, and some are small. Many build nests, and some even protect their young. Some migrate thousands of miles to get here. All of them eat something, and in turn are in danger of being eaten. It is a complex and fascinating world beneath the waves and it is one that is in need of appreciation and conservation, even if we rarely visit this part of our backyard.

Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon: America’s First Great Ornithologist Presented by Matthew Vincent

Event Dates and Times

3/22/2016
Severson Dells Nature Center 8786 Montague Road Rockford IL 61102
Join Matthew Vincent has he presents a brief analyzes of the whys and work of Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon. Both men were possessed with a powerful interest in the natural world, but also were competitive entrepreneurs. Their exploits bring together elements of early American history, keen naturalistic observations, and insights into intaglio print making process. Wilson had an interest in bringing knowledge of avian life in the eastern US to the general public. Ultimately Audubon will succeed in creating artistic master pieces that can be assessed not only in their popular appeal, but also their esthetic excellence, while Wilson whose work was more academic, provides a picture of the scientific method of early 19 century America. Matthew Vincent teaches studio art and art history at Rock Valley College. He has great interest and knowledge of the local flora and fauna and brings a unique artist eye to any hike tromping around in nature you may get to take with him.

Tour the Grand Canyon

Event Dates and Times

2/21/2016 - Starts: 1:30 PM - Ends: 3:00 PM
Severson Dells Nature Center 8786 Montague Road Rockford IL 61102
Join photographer Dave Donahue for a program about the Grand Canyon. He will discuss the geologic history of the canyon as well as some of the interesting personal histories of people who became legends of the Grand Canyon area. The photographic tour will start with images from the less frequently visited North Rim of the Canyon; proceed to images from the Marble Canyon area and the Toroweap overlook on the South Rim. The bulk of the program will be devoted to images made during two raft trips through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River which will provide the opportunity to view the Canyon from a different perspective.
Dave has been taken photographs for over 50 years and is an active member of the Rockford Photo Club. His primary interest in photography is creating images of landscape and nature. He attended an Elderhostel photography session in 2001 at Marble Canyon, Arizona and fell in love with the Southwest. He has traveled there once or twice every year since exploring the National Parks, BLM properties, and wilderness areas taking pictures. Call to register 1-815-335-2915.
