Boxes.. Upon boxes.. It’s something Boone county resident Mel Welch didn't expect to see inside the Belvidere public safety building...and what's worse is they've been sitting there for 34 years..
“We are aware they have very little quarters and working space and that they could certainly be more efficient if they had more money to increase the size of the building"
Mel joined several other Boone county residents for a tour of the Belvidere public safety building Saturday. Crammed into narrow hallways.. the group debates whether to approve a one percent sales tax...aiming to fund an estimated 1.6 million dollar renovation of the building. .. Including a 26 thousand square foot expansion.. Relocation of the counties 911 center.. and a major technology upgrade. Retired circuit judge Gerald Grub couldn't agree more

They call the basement the “lower level" ...right now sewage pipes hang over evidence lockers and worst of all.. the counties phone communication center sits below water pipes that are known to crack... the worst of the crowding isn't with objects.. It’s with employees. If approved, The new tax will not apply to to groceries, rent, medication and several other expenses... also..the city anticipates that the building will not need major repairs until the year 2025.
