WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Adam Maxwell knows what it's like to fight for his community.
"There were signs all the way down from Mulford to Charles. I agree with them, I don't want an asphalt quarry this close to my house."
He was one of hundreds of residents who fought an intense battle back in 2007 to keep an asphalt plant out of the Mulford Quarry at Charles St. and Mulford. Now, four years later, their efforts might have paid off.
"Our plans right now are to see the zoning process through, and if its approved by the county, we would not put an asphalt plant at Mulford."
Instead, William Charles announced today it plans move that asphalt plant to this quarry along East State Street.
" Having state street or u.S. 20 out there and access to the tollway, makes the in and out a lot easier where the impact on neighborhoods is more minimal , we won't be trucking through any neighborhoods.
But a new location brings similar fears for this Rockford neighborhood. Residents worry the frequent blasting will disrupt their quality of life and say they' re upset they weren't notified of the project sooner.
" I really feel for them because who ever sold them the house didn't disclose that but this has been a mining operation with blasting for 30 plus years and it just happens we're the ones buying it."
The company insists they will do whatever they can to be good neighbors, but residents nearby promise their fight is not over.
