No Lovie, Urlacher As Bears Defense Returns

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) -- Veterans Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman are leading the Chicago Bears defense through a leadership transition.

Briggs is taking on the responsibility of calling defensive signals with Brian Urlacher retired.

Tillman said the defense must create its own identity now, even with a cover-2 scheme that is very similar to the one run under former coach Lovie Smith.

The Bears defense and offense are trying to fight their way through the first series of injuries to hit in camp. They include a season-ending torn Achilles to defensive end Turk McBride, and a calf strain for left tackle Jermon Bushrod.
