Butler Granted Release By NIU

DeKALB, Ill. – Linebacker Devon Butler has been granted his release from the program and will no longer be a member of the Huskie football team, NIU Head Coach Dave Doeren announced Wednesday.

Doeren said Butler’s departure is based on many factors and is not the result of any single action or incident.

“Devon has not lived up to the standards we set for members of the Northern Illinois football team,” Doeren said. “At this time, we feel it is in the best interest of both Devon and of our football program for him to make a fresh start at another institution.”

Butler was entering his redshirt junior season for the Huskies in 2012. He played in 24 games for NIU at middle linebacker in 2009-10.
