Big Ten Considers Expanding To 12 Schools

He says the network, which is scheduled to launch August 30th, would benefit from another big-name university in a large television market.

In a copyright story in the Des Moines Register, Delany says officials need to address the issue in the next year. He offered no specific candidates for expansion.

In football, a 12th school could mean two divisions and a postseason playoff. That's an appealing concept to the startup network.

But coaches, including Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, have expressed concern. Some worry about missing out on a B-C-S bowl by losing the conference title game.

However, Delany says expansion would not guarantee the Big Ten would create an extra game. He says a title game has -- quote -- "a negative impact on your losing team."
