NBA commissioner David Stern held a news conference today and steadfastly insisted that allegations of a former referee betting on games are an isolated case. The FBI is looking into whether Tim Donaghy bet on games he officiated over the past two seasons. Stern says Donaghy submitted his resignation on the ninth of this month.
Stern calls it the "worst situation I've ever experienced either as fan of the NBA, a lawyer for the NBA or commissioner of the NBA." He's pledging to do everything in his power to not let something like this happen again.
Donaghy, who has yet to be charged with a crime, is expected to turn himself in at US District Court in Brooklyn later this week or early next week, according to a person familiar with the investigation.
