The 33-year-old Kendall is a .298 career hitter in 12 major league seasons with Pittsburgh and Oakland. He was batting only .226 for the A's this season with two homers and 22 R-B-Is. He was a three-time All-Star with the Pirates and is known for his ability to get on base. He has more walks than strikeouts during his career.
The Cubs also have Geovany Soto and Koyie Hill as catchers.
Bowen, acquired in a trade from San Diego last month for Michael Barrett, had been designated for assignment by the Cubs. He had only two hits in 31 at-bats for the Cubs in 10 games.
