Hamlin gambled on a late pit stop taking two fresh tires instead of four. That helped him get in front of Martin Truex Junior, points leader Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Junior who all took four tires in their final scheduled pit stop on lap 255 during a caution.
Hamlin vaulted from fourth to first and held on to beat Gordon by less than a car length.
Truex Junior finished third.
