Former Bears Coach Again Criticizes NFL Player Association

At a news conference at his downtown Chicago restaurant, Ditka introduced hobbled former offensive lineman Brian DeMarco as an example of the union's indifference to the medical needs of ex-players.

Ditka and other retired players want the union to increase benefits to players hobbled by N-F-L play. Ditka calls the union's actions so far unacceptable.

Former Bears safety Dave Duerson, a member of the union's pension and disability board, has said Ditka is off base. He added, Ditka has come late to the issue.

Spearheaded by Ditka, DeLamilleure and others, an organization called "Gridiron Greats" is providing assistance to needy former players who are unable to work because of football-related injuries.
