Wood was hoping to move to the bullpen at the start of the season and get his career back on track after years of injuries. He hurt his ribs early this spring when he slipped while getting out of a hot tub. Then he was slowed by a sore triceps and sore shoulder.
The 29-year-old pitcher has been on the disabled list eleven times in his career. His latest setback came with a week left in camp, when his arm felt weak after he threw 18 pitches in a spring game.
The Cubs also put right-hander Juan Mateo on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder and optioned outfielder Buck Coats to Triple-A Iowa.
