MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- A Florida development team is bringing its "A" game as in advantage over Mesa in the battle to host the Chicago Cubs during spring training.
Florida baseball backers said they find hope that the Ricketts family, the new owners of the Cubs, have ties to Florida but not Arizona. Also, Florida is close to Puerto Rico, Venezuela and other sources of baseball talent.
Members of the Ricketts family recently traveled to the Naples, Fla., area to look at potential spring training facility sites.
Naples City Councilman Gary Price said a proposal to become the new spring training home of the Cubs should be ready within six months.
Initial plans call for a 15,000-seat stadium with practice fields and other amenities.
The new Cubs' owners are scheduled to visit Mesa next week.
