Oklahoma City Thunder guard and Beloit native Kyle Weaver is returning home to provide a special day for children and families in Beloit. On Saturday, August 29th Weaver will kick off Weaver of Dreams Day by providing a free basketball camp for 100 boys and girls from the area at Beloit Memorial High School’s Barkin Arena from 9 AM until noon. When camp breaks Weaver will head over to distribute a box of food and personal care items to 400 children and families from the Beloit area. Weaver has partnered up with the international hunger relief organization Feed the Children and Beloit College’s Upward Bound Program who will help distribute the boxes to families from 2-3 PM at ABC Supply Company (601 Henry Ave, Beloit, WI).
Local churches and community organizations pre-identified all 400 families who will each receive a voucher for a box of food and personal care items designed to supplement a family for up to one week.
Weaver returns home to Beloit every offseason where his parents Lamont and Jean Weaver still reside. “I have seen firsthand how this economic downturn has impacted families in this small community. I wanted to do something to offer those families hit hard by the downturn some kind of relief,” said Weaver.
“Coming from where I am from people don’t come back as an example and show you how to make it,” Weaver said. “I return home as much as I can to show children from the Beloit area that they too can make it. I am committed to doing what I can to improve their quality of life, encourage and support their journey.”
Kyle Weaver a basketball standout graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in2004. Wisconsin natives Coaches Dick and Tony Bennett saw something special in Weaver when they offered him a scholarship to attend Washington State University. Weaver embraced the opportunity he was given and made one of the worst teams in the Pac 10 Conference one of the best. After graduating from Washington State he was drafted into the NBA and played his Rookie Season with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
