Hogs Fall in 86th Minute, 1-0 to Aeros

Rockford, Ill.- The Houston Aeros evened the series with a double overtime 1-0 win at the Rockford MetroCentre in Game 2 of the West Division Semifinals on Saturday.

The Rockford IceHogs and Aeros played to a scoreless tie in the first 80 minutes, but then at 6:57 in the second overtime, Ryan Jones broke the stalemate with a goal off of the back of Corey Crawford's pad.

Danny Irmen passed to Jones on a breakaway and the rookie winger bounced the puck off of Crawford's pad and into the goal. It was the first professional tally for Jones in his fifth game since signing with the Aeros out of Miami University in Ohio after the NCAA season ended.

The game breaks a 65-year record for longest 1-0 game ever played in the Calder Cup playoffs, beating the mark set by the Hershey Bears' 1-0 win over the Buffalo Bison on March 17, 1943 after 26:04 of overtime.

It is only the seventh scoreless overtime game in Calder Cup history. The last time it happened was April 27, 1997 in Springfield, Mass., between the Portland Pirates and Springfield Falcons.

Crawford finished with 37 saves in the losing effort, while Barry Brust had 30 saves for the 86-minute shutout. The IceHogs and Aeros are now tied 1-1 in the best-of-seven series.

Both teams remain strong on the penalty kill. Both finished the game without giving up a power-play goal in five attempts.

Next Game: The Aeros and IceHogs take it to Texas for some more intense Calder Cup playoff hockey in Game 3 of the West Division Semifinals. The Game gets underway at 7:05 on Tuesday, April 22, at the Toyota Center. .
