Parts of Arizona and New Mexico are buried under snow, courtesy of the same stormy weather that brought flooding and mudslides to California.
Up to 6 inches of new snow is expected today in northern Arizona, on top of the more than 4 feet that fell this week. Some roofs have collapsed under the area's third-highest five-day snowfall of all time.
Forecasters say that blowing and drifting snow could make driving treacherous. But interstates that had been closed in northern Arizona were open to traffic this morning.
Heavy snow is also expected in the mountains of southern New Mexico, where some places have already received more than 2 feet. And forecasters say winds could top 90 mph in spots.
Storms also drenched Las Vegas, where more rain fell this week than all of last year.
But in California, the rain has stopped and evacuation orders have been lifted for homes threatened by landslides and debris.
The storm is expected to make its way east across the country.
| FAMILY DISASTER PLAN Families should be prepared for all hazards that could affect their area. NOAA’s National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross urge every family to develop a family disaster plan. Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
