Residents along the Gulf Coast are bracing for the first Atlantic hurricane to target the United States this year.
Hurricane Ida is slowly moving toward the region with 105 mph winds, bringing the threat of flooding and storm surges.
Forecasters have issued a hurricane warning for the Gulf Coast from Mississippi to Florida. Tropical storm warnings and hurricane watches are in effect along much of the coastline. That includes New Orleans.
Louisiana's governor has declared a state of emergency as a precaution.
Authorities say Ida could make landfall as early as Tuesday morning, although it's forecast to weaken by then.
Officials and residents are keeping a close eye on the Category 2 hurricane as it approaches, though there are no immediate plans for evacuations.
Rainfall totals are expected to be from 3 to 5 inches with some areas getting up to 8 inches.
| FAMILY DISASTER PLAN Families should be prepared for all hazards that could affect their area. NOAA’s National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross urge every family to develop a family disaster plan. Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
