A typhoon churning across the western Pacific continued moving away from the Northern Mariana Islands on Sunday as residents began cleaning up after gusting winds and flooding.
The National Weather Service says only the island of Agrihan in the U.S. commonwealth remained under a typhoon warning early Sunday.
Weather service forecaster Paul Stanko in Guam says Agrihan was hit by the edge of Typhoon Melor, and the warning may be canceled in a few hours.
Similar warnings for two other islands -- Saipan and Tinian -- have already ended.
Melor was located 145 miles northwest of Saipan and Tinian, moving west at 15 mph, as of early Sunday. Typhoon force winds of up to 70 mph extended up to 65 miles from the center of the storm.
| FAMILY DISASTER PLAN Families should be prepared for all hazards that could affect their area. NOAA’s National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross urge every family to develop a family disaster plan. Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
