Outdoor summertime activities can turn dangerous quickly when thunderstorms roll in.
Officials have a phrase to remember: "When thunder roars, go indoors."
This is Lightning Safety Awareness Week and suggestions for avoiding an accident are coming from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service and Illinois Little League.
If outdoors, tips include avoiding water and get to a building or car-- stay away from trees. Stay in shelter for 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder.
If indoors, stay off land-line phones, away from windows and exterior doors, off porches and decks, avoid showers and plumbing fixtures, and do not unplug electrical equipment once a storm has come near.

NOAA’s National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross urge every family to develop a family disaster plan. Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
