The National Weather Service says powerful winds have torn the roofs from apartment buildings in central Illinois and caused structural damage to homes.
Meteorologist Chuck Schaffer says at least one person suffered minor injuries.
Schaffer says a fast-moving line of storms with winds up to 60 miles per hour struck north and northeast Springfield the hardest.
He says the storms have moved out of the state and winds have diminished to about 30 mph.
The high winds also downed power lines and cut electricity to hundreds of residents.
Schaffer says the winds should subside later Sunday.
Meanwhile, portions of northern Illinois have dealt with strong thunderstorms that brought heavy rains and flooding.

Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
