The federal government has paid only about one-tenth of the $4.3 million in claims Columbia County and municipalities in it submitted for June flood damage to roads and infrastructure.
Emergency Management Director Pat Beghin told the Columbia County Board of Supervisors judiciary committee Wednesday the claims probably won't be paid until next year.
He also says he expects them to continue to rise.
All four Columbia County cities -- Portage, Wisconsin Dells, Columbus and Lodi -- reported damage, as did most of the towns and villages.
The town of Caledonia had the largest claim: more than $1.06 million. So far, it has received nothing from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Chairman Steve Pate says he believes Caledonia will get its money, but in the meantime, it owes a hefty sum for road repairs.
| FAMILY DISASTER PLAN Families should be prepared for all hazards that could affect their area. NOAA’s National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross urge every family to develop a family disaster plan. Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
