Illinois town says earthquake caused massive leak

The supervisor of Pembroke Township of Kankakee County in northeastern Illinois says an April earthquake may be the cause of a massive water main break. Larry Gibbs says officials found the leak in an area "out in a field with no disturbance around it." He says the leak is responsible for the loss of hundreds of thousands of gallons of water. A series of earthquakes, one as strong as 5.4, rocked Illinoisans starting April 18th. It was felt as far away as Ohio and Kentucky and in Chicago's Loop, 240 miles north of the epicenter in West Salem. Gibbs says local officials speculate the earthquake is the cause of the leak. He says workers are trying to fix the break.
| FAMILY DISASTER PLAN Families should be prepared for all hazards that could affect their area. NOAA’s National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross urge every family to develop a family disaster plan. Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
