Grand Canyon Floods
Grand Canyon floods breach dam, force evacuations

Sheriffs at the Grand Canyon say they're not as concerned about a flood situation as they were earlier in the day. Still, dozens of people have been flown out by helicopter after an earthen dam gave way Sunday causing flooding in a side canyon. It's home to about 400 members of the Havasupai Indian tribe. Their village of Supai is on high ground and no damage is reported. But some hiking trails and footbridges were washed out and trees were uprooted. The canyon area has had as much as eight inches of rain since Friday, and there's still the danger of flash floods. About 150 people were airlifted to safety during the day, and evacuations were to continue until dark. But many residents and campers have chosen to stay put.
| FAMILY DISASTER PLAN Families should be prepared for all hazards that could affect their area. NOAA’s National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross urge every family to develop a family disaster plan. Where will your family be when disaster strikes? They could be anywhere at work, at school, or in the car. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children are safe? Disaster may force you to evacuate your neighborhood or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services water, gas, electricity, or telephones were cut off? Follow these basic steps to develop a family disaster plan...
