It was the first day of class today for Rockford's new Galapagos Charter School and students entered the building without controversy... and without parents.
The "No Parents Policy" caused concern at Rockford's first charter school, Legacy Academy, on its opening day last month. However Galapagos administrators say they made it clear in advance that parents would not be allowed in the building today. They wanted to set the school's tone from the start.
After today, parents are welcome to enter, and those we talked to plan to be in class tomorrow. Parents are excited about the school's focus on college. Students make their first college campus visits in fourth grade
Jessica Whitaker enrolled her first grader after noticing the differences in charter schools and public schools.
"It seems like with the charter schools I've been hearing about in Chicago, that the kids have better testing scores and everything," she said. "So I wanted him to try something different, better way to get into college and everything."
Galapagos opened today with about 100 kindergarten through third graders. Eventually, it's set to expand to a Kindergarten through eighth grade school.

Sounds kind of strange to me, as a parent if i am not allowed to see the school and am not allowed to walk my child to class, my child would not be going to that school, if i was a parent i would have left with my child and not returned. i would rather deal with a school that i can see and know what is happening to my child and not wonder. Sounds like that school should be investigated. you are not running a military academy, just a school with little kids.
