It was back to school for about 30,000 students in the Rockford School District today. While Superintendent Linda Hernandez told us this morning things went pretty smoothly, 23 News got several complaints about the first day back.

The grandmother of kindergartner Makia McClur says her first time ever on a school bus alone didn't go so well, McClur never made it to her daycare.

Transportation officials tells us McClur and four other children ended up at the transportation center after mix ups with their drop offs. A mistake, McClur's grandmother says she can't get answers for and never wants to happen again.

A mistake, transportation officials tell us is bound to happen when dealing with nearly 21 thousand students. The transportation department has also instated a new wristband program this year, that should help get the right students on the right buses and where they need to go on time.

We are talking about people's young children here. They need to have things "ironed out" before they get the children on the buses. Mothers are trusting that their small children will be taken care of when they are in school and on the bus. You cannot blame a child for "being scared and not speaking up". The adult bus driver needs to make sure the children are getting off the bus at the correct stops. You cannot blame the child. This situation happened to a friend of mine and when she called the transportation dept. the lady responded with "Not another lost child". To hear that is a nightmare for a mother. They need to get it together.

It will happen, but you have to let the transportation dept work the kinks out of their routes. It usually takes a couple of days to iron things out but they do work out. Part of the problem lays with young students who are afraid to do new things and will not speak up or answer the drivers. But why did this grandmother call the TV station. Has she done this before? Did she have problems with the transportation when her children were in school or was she just looking for her 5 minutes of fame?
