ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Campaign contributions for the last quarter of 2011 are in and District 16 incumbent Don Manzullo was out-raised by his opponent Adam Kinzinger of the 11th District.
As the new lines were drawn for the redistricting map, District 16 incumbent Don Manzullo found himself matching up against Kinzinger, formerly of the 11th District. Over the last three months of 2011, Kinzinger reached nearly 286 thousand dollars in campaign contributions--that's almost 70 percent higher than Manzullo’s total of one hundred seventy thousand for the same period and Kinzinger feels the pick up in contributions came at the perfect time.
Kinzinger said, "Fundraising is obviously important when it comes to being able to get that message out whether its on television or mail or anything else but financial support is important to do that. But then again it also shows that people are gaining and getting behind the campaign and that we're gaining a lot of steam right when steam needs to be gained."
While Kinzinger may have out raised Manzullo in the last quarter of 2011, Manzullo says he's not worried for a variety of reason--one being had he has out raised Kinzinger the period before that.
Meanwhile the race for money raised in the 17th District is not even close as democratic candidate Cheri Bustos is well ahead of her fellow candidates and already has her sights set on republican incumbent bobby schilling.
Bustos said, "The primary is March 20th. So we will make the determination once that gets a little close how we will spend that money, but to be able to match an incumbent who has the full backing of the Washington Republican establishment shows that our campaign is gaining momentum."
Bustos, a working mom who has never run for office before has already raised 30 times as much as fellow candidate George Gaulrapp, but the Freeport mayor says the amount of money raised isn't everything.
Gaulrapp said, “If you recall just a short period ago. Dave Koechler, Senator Koechler, who was in the race raised 176,000 dollars . He was in the lead in money rising. Where is he today? He's not in the race. So money doesn't always count. It's really commitment to the campaign, connecting with people and who you communicate your ideas."
Augustana College professor Greg Aguilar is also in the race. There were no records of his campaign contributions and he was unavailable for comment.
