WASHINGTON (AP) -- He may not be able to get his proposals through a divided Congress -- but President Barack Obama is hoping that the ideas he outlined in his State of the Union speech have been heard by voters.

As Republicans -- including those seeking to challenge him in November -- call for the government to back off and let the free market rule, Obama pleaded for an active government that ensures economic fairness for everyone.

He offered a plan to help more struggling homeowners refinance, and to help students afford college. And he called for higher taxes on millionaires, saying it's not "class warfare" but simply a matter of fairness.

State of Union-GOP Response

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address charges that Obama has tried to divide Americans.

The response was offered by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who also said that Obama has resorted to "extremism" and "stifling, anti-growth policies."

Daniels said Obama's efforts in recent months to criticize the rich and raise their taxes is an attempt "to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others."

Daniels served as President George W. Bush's first budget chief and is a two-term governor. He is a foe of budget deficits. Critics say he served during the time the nation generated massive deficits.

Obama said instead of a country where "a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by," there can be an economy "where everyone gets a fair shot," does their "fair share" and "plays by the same set of rules."

Obama said that while the economy is on the way back, there's still more to be done. He suggested that half of the money that is no longer being spent on the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan should be used to help create jobs and increase competitiveness.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says the state of the union is getting stronger, and he says the country has come too far to turn back now.

Obama is delivering an election-year State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress and millions of television viewers. He says American values are at stake and must be reclaimed.

Obama says no challenge is more urgent than how to restore the basic American promise that hard work pays off.

Facing determined GOP opposition and a tough economy, Obama is proposing making millionaires pay more in taxes. He's also proposing more relief for homeowners and a crackdown on sending U.S. jobs overseas. He also has tough remarks for a divided Congress, saying lawmakers are part of the problem.

The only help us middle class need is for the RICH TO PAY THEIR TAXES. Even some of the White House Staff are behind in thier taxes. Let the rich pay 33% like the rest of us do. They call it investment income, well I have money in saving accounts isn't the income from that an investment taxed at 15%, because the BANKS are using it to make money.

More people on food stamps than ever before in this country. How did nobody see that coming with a black president.

But the question is Darb, who would Biden be? While one may think the logical choice would be the Jefferson's neighbors (I forget their names but the wife was played by Lenny Kravitz's mom), Biden's actions and gaffes see to flow more towards Mr. Bentley. Yeah, hard to say you're for the stuggling people when your wife jets off to Spain with 30 of her closest friends at millions of dollars to the taxpayers. But we should give her a break. After all, she did lower her standards drastically by allowing herself to be (staged) photographed in a Target.
