ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Friends of a soldier who recently passed away are honoring his legacy with a bone marrow drive in Rockford.
We brought you to U.S. Marine Jacob Hess’ story last night.
Community members signed up to be an organ or tissue donor at the Rock River Valley Blood Center on Perryville in honor of Hess. Hess had saved a woman’s life in Florida by donating his bone marrow to her when he was 18. On January 1st, he was killed while serving in Afghanistan. Now, his family and friends are hosting donor drives around the nation in Hess’ memory.
“"I just wanted to do something to recognize Jacob in our hometown and also so that Kirsten would have something to maybe help her healing process, remind her of how many lives Jacob touched and can still touch,” said bone marrow drive sponsor, Terry Marinelli.
Each person who donates will receive a post card to write about their donation that will be sent to Hess’ family.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A fallen marine’s donation saves a mother’s life and now a local woman is trying to honor him and help others by asking us to do the same.
“I wanted to do something from Rockford to show people that we are thinking of Jacob too.”
Marine Sergeant Jacob Hess was killed in Afghanistan in January. Friends and family say he was more than just a hero on the front-lines. Hess donated bone marrow just a few years before his death and ended up saving a woman’s life in Florida.
In tonight’s Stateline Spotlight at 10, we’ll meet that survivor and hear Jake’s story.
