WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County Republican leader who drew national attention with a controversial entry in an April newsletter will be able to keep his position.
Jim Thompson will remain Winnebago County Republican Chairman after a vote of support by the executive session committee.
Thompson apologized for showing a picture of a Zonkie in the most recent newsletter and writing "If we can teach him to read a teleprompter we will have two living creatures the media fawns over that's half black half white and all a**".
"After consultation with my executive committee. They have decided unanimously to retain me as chair. And I am pleased to continue to serve in that capacity,"
Several politicians called for Thompson's resignation, including Rockford Tea Party President David Hale, Republican County Board Member John Guevara and Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Bruce Rauner.
