WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- A former Winnebago County Sheriff's Department sergeant who retired just 16 days ago is now throwing his hat into the ring for sheriff.
Jeffery Schroeder kicked off his campaign Wednesday. The democrat has more than 36 years of law enforcement experience and says he's not a career politician so he's only running for one term. Schroeder says his main mission is to get crime under control.
Schroeder faces off against fellow democrats; Bob Springer, Randy Olson and Bob Redmond. Republican Gary Caruana has also announced his candidacy. Current sheriff, Dick Meyers, is retiring at the end of his term.
