Retired Teachers Talk Pension Crisis

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Some local teachers who have retired from their jobs are trying to learn more about their benefits.

Some members of the Winnebago County Retired Teachers Association gathered at Midway Village Thursday for a special luncheon.

Many are focused on the underfunded pension crisis in Illinois. The association's president Fred Kunz says teachers made their contributions, but the state isn't honoring its promise, leaving educators with a lot of questions.

"What is it going to be, what adjustments may be voted in, and also whether or not some of the things teachers believe protect them and their pension system, are constitutional within the Illinois constitution," Kunz said.

The Winnebago County Retired Teachers Association has about 450 members. They'll be participating in their state convention where elections will be held. That's October 21st through the 22nd in Springfield.
