Rep. Kinzinger on F-22 Safety Concerns

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The former military pilot is now using his clout in Congress to address safety concerns with the F-22 Raptor.

The current 11th District Republican Congressman and almost surely future 16th District Congressman told me today about his efforts with Democratic Senator Mark Warner to try to find solutions to problems with the F-22's oxygen deprivation issues. Their work led to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta calling for restricting F-22 use until the problem is solved.

"We hope to find within six months to a year a solution to this problem, we need this aircraft. This is ultimately going to strengthen our national defense posture because you're going to have a plane that doesn't have problems any more. A plane that is just out operating at 100 percent capacity," Kinzinger said.

Kinzinger says he's out to make sure that the pilots who came to him about the safety issues don't face punishment. One of the pilots still has disciplinary action pending as a result of coming forward.
