Primary Election Results

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- It was Election Day here in the Stateline, but it was not a good day for turnout and it was a very brutal day for incumbents.

Only 66 people voted in the 6th Ward Democratic Primary where Incumbent Lenny Jacobson falls by four votes to Vernon Hilton. There will also be a new 8th Ward Alderman because the Incumbent Nancy Johnson gets just 21 percent of the vote in her primary race with Jeanne Oddo.

The only Democratic Incumbent to survive the primary is Karen Elyea she survives a three candidate primary with 51 percent of the vote.

On the republican ticket, current 1st Ward Alderman Tim Durkee survives his primary race with Brian Jenkins. Jamie Getchius wins the 2nd Ward Primary that seat is open with the retirement of Pat Curran. Another open seat is in the 4th Ward where Kevin Frost beat Peter Scardato by about 260 votes.

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- The final results in Freeport are just in and check out the Citizen's Party Primary Former Mayor Jim Gitz has defeated current Mayor George Gaulrapp by a 54% to 46% margin.

Gitz will meet Jon Staben in the General Election after he beats Bettye Corbin in the People's Party Primary.

BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- In Belvidere current City Clerk Shauna Arco doubles up Joanne Riley in her Republican Primary Race.

ILLINOIS (WIFR) -- It's election day across most of Northern Illinois.

Chicago area voters will narrow down their options to replace former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. 14 Democrats and 4 Republicans are on today's special ballot. Jackson has plead guilty to misusing three-quarters of a million dollars in campaign money on personal items. He'll be sentenced in June.

Here in the Stateline, the primary elections aren't quite as high profile and fewer voters are showing up to the polls. Most of the contested races are for area Alderman, but in Freeport, Mayor George Gaulrapp could be unseated by former Mayor James Gitz in the citizens' party primary. In Rockford, each party's mayoral candidate is unopposed. The general election will be April 9th.

Tonight's polls will close at 7:00.
