UPDATE: Illinois Senate Delays Vote on Gambling

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Senate is putting the brakes on yet another attempt to expand casino gambling.

Senate officials expected a vote on the floor as early as yesterday. But after a closed-door meeting, majority Democrats put it off.

A spokeswoman for Senate President John Cullerton says supporters will continue discussions to ensure passage.

A committee approved a plan Wednesday to add casinos in five cities -- including Chicago -- and to put tax revenue from them toward public education.

That Wednesday vote came hours after Gov. Pat Quinn said in a speech announcing his budget plan that he would be open to expanded gambling if money went toward schools. The Democrat has vetoed two similar gambling proposals in the past year.

SPRINGFIELD (WIFR) -- Brand new gaming legislation was introduced to the senate floor in Springfield.

It includes a casino for Rockford. Earlier this week Governor Pat Quinn officially vetoed a gambling bill from 2011. But Senator Steve Stadelman says this new legislation answers some of the concerns the governor had with the previous gaming measure.

"One he wanted some ethics legislation involved. There will be some attempt to address his concerns along those lines. The Governor mentioned some of the revenue going for education, and more of it. There will be some attempts to address that so hopefully there will be enough to get it through both chambers and for him to sign it," Stadelman said.

A vote on the new gaming legislation could come as soon as Thursday.

ILLINOIS (WIFR) -- Gambling expansion is being discussed again in Springfield. State Senator Dave Syverson tells us they’re reworking legislation to build a casino in Rockford. It could come up for a vote as soon as Thursday.

This comes after Governor Pat Quinn vetoed the 2011 Gaming Bill today. This is the one he felt didn't’t provide enough oversight.
