IL Clerk Wants Clarity on Gay Marriage

CHICAGO (AP) -- A county clerk from downstate Illinois who's asking to intervene in a lawsuit over the state's gay marriage ban says she just wants clarity so she can carry out her duties.

Tazewell County Clerk Christie Webb is one of two county clerks who asked a judge for permission to defend Illinois' gay marriage ban in a lawsuit seeking to overturn it. That's because Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez in Chicago and Attorney General Lisa Madigan say the ban is unconstitutional and won't defend it.

Webb says she has no personal position on the issue of gay marriage but wants to ensure there's one law that applies to all counties.

The Thomas More Society late Friday filed a request on behalf of Webb and Effingham County Clerk Kerry Hirtzel.
