Amazon Turned Away by Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) -- On this Cyber Monday, when online retailers are expecting their biggest sales day of the year, there's a setback in court for Amazon.com.

The Supreme Court is refusing to consider a request from Amazon and from Overstock.com to consider throwing out New York state's taxes on internet purchases.

Generally, web retailers don't have to charge sales taxes in states where they lack a physical presence. But the New York law applies to companies that use affiliates that refer customers to the retailer's website and collect a commission.
