CHICAGO (AP) -- A spokesman for Mike Madigan says the House speaker will not testify before the commission investigation the influence of lawmakers and others on admissions at the University of Illinois.
Admissions Review Chairman Abner Mikva said in June that he would like to hear Madigan's explanation for intervening on behalf of at least 40 university applicants over a five year period.
Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said Thursday the speaker told Mikva during a telephone conversation this week that he will not appear before the commission. Brown says Madigan told Mikva he was only responding to requests from constituents to check on students' applications.
Mikva did not return a call from The Associated Press.
