Durbin Speaks on Earmarks and Keith Creek Flood Damage

As more federal funding comes flooding in for those who live by the Alpine Dam at Keith Creek. This time compliments of the omnibus bill passed by Congress last night.

The 410 billion dollar spending package signed by President Obama today included just over half a million dollars earmarked to continue and complete a feasibility study of the work needed to provide reliable flood protection for those who live along Keith Creek. This is on of the thousands of earmarks included in the spending package that has some lawmakers outraged. But, Senator Dick Durbin tells 23 WIFR he sees the earmarks a little differently than others.

"I look at it as a way to send money back to Illinois for specific projects that might not otherwise have been noticed. Some of the folks that live out here in Washington really don't know what the problems are in Rockford. They wouldn't know much about the Keith Creek watershed and the flooding in that community. I know it, I've seen it and that's why I put this earmark in to make sure that we move more quickly toward a solution to this problem." said Durbin.

Durbin say if he didn't earmark that money directly in the bill, than it would have been years before this feasibility funding would have been considered.
